What To Look For In A Home Inspector

Local building practices may vary, but the following general tips may help you avoid scams and find a qualified home inspector in your area:

In the USA, look for an inspector who is a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), or any other comparable professional trade organization.

To ensure you receive an unbiased, impartial report, make sure the inspector you call doesn't make repairs or recommend contractors.

Be especially leery of an inspector who is eager to repair problems when they're found.

Ask to see a sample report format, with the homeowner's name and any identifying information removed.

Call city inspectors or building offices for referrals, and ask the home inspectors for references.

Remember that in most cases, you get what you pay for. If a less-detailed home inspection misses important problems, you could pay for those problems over the next 15 to 30 years. A few dollars spent now may save you thousands of dollars later - and protect your family's safety.
